What’s in Store for the Box Office?

Nov 9, 2008 Author: Shan | Filed under: Box Office, James Bond, Movie Release

The experts have predicted a windfall for some movies this Holiday Season. The Expected Top Five include-

Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa (opening this weekend)
Quantum of Solace (the new 007 movie, opening Nov. 14)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (sci-fi remake, opening Dec. 12)
Twilight (teen vampire saga based on best-seller, opening Nov. 21)
Yes Man (Jim Carrey high-concept comedy, opening Dec. 19)

High-profile movies that are probably conspicuous by their absence include: the Kidman-Hugh Jackman epic Australia (opening Nov. 26); Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon (opening Dec. 5)—think Couric/Palin, only with bigger ideas and more Oscar buzz; Cruise’s Nazi Germany thriller Valkyrie (opening Dec. 26); and Brad Pitt’s age-defying The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (opening Dec. 25).

Hancock Rules the Roost

Will Smith has star-powered the poorly reviewed superhero hybrid to a $66 million opening weekend, and a No. 1 finish, according to estimates today.

WALL-E, last weekend’s champ, stayed strong, grossing another $33.4 million, but finished a distant second.

Hancock goes down as Smith’s seventh straight movie to open No. 1. If you count Shark Tale, the 2004 animated comedy, as a Smith movie, his streak stands at eight straight.

Overall, Hancock has grossed $107.3 million since “previewing” on Tuesday night and “opening” on Wednesday.

Looking strictly at the movie’s first five days, Wednesday-Sunday, Hancock took in $100.4 million, per Box Office Mojo stats, far behind the pace of this summer’s two leading movies, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($152 million) and Iron Man ($112.1 million).
